PRECONFERENCE: Best Practices I Managing Dementia with Behaviors-Julia Lesselyong, PsyD, Geropsychologist, Private Practice/Consultant for Integrated Geriatric, 7/25 7:30AM-9:30AM
Description: Providing care for people with dementia comes with unique challenges at each stage of the disease. This presentation aims to provide some education about the use of non-pharmacological approaches to working with the behavioral and care challenges in the Early, Moderate and Advanced stages of the disease.
“Dementia Moments” Workshop provides an 8-minute interactive experience during which the participants perform some daily living tasks, as if they were living with Alzheimer's disease or another dementia. The workshop involves performing simple tasks such as buttoning a shirt or counting coins, while wearing gloves, goggles and headphones blaring background noise. The goal is not to mimic dementia, but instead to mimic the emotional experience of someone with dementia trying to perform in a normalworld while struggling with distorted perception and difficulty thinking. After the experience, participants share their thoughts and feelings. They discuss what might have helped them perform the tasks better and learn some approaches to minimize the distress of peopleliving with dementia.
